Battling Stigma in Older Generations
At SACH, we recognize the problem within communities about stigma in the older generations. Many folk within older generations do not see the value in maintaining god mental wellness. This idea not only harms younger generations who grow up with this stigma, but it also downplays the struggles of those who otherwise would reach out for additional help. To help the older generations and end this stigma, please consider doing the following:
Explain mental wellness to other generations by making a comparison to physical health. Older generations already know the value of their health, so comparing it to their physical health will make it easier for them to sympathize.
Be ready to answer a lot of questions. The information we have access to now is abundantly more compared to any other generation, so questions are bound to be asked. Be patience, what might seem like common knowledge to you might not be common knowledge for them.
Offer professional resources to look into. At times, a conversation can only go so far when debating topics like this. By providing professional resources, it opens the floor to the other party to do their own research and learn more in depth about mental health as a whole.
