Battling Stigma in Hispanic/Latinx Communities

Within the Hispanic and Latinx communities, there is a heavy stigma surrounding mental health and mental wellness. We want to be a part of changing that. Here in SACH, we recognize that battling stigma in different communities may require a different approach compared to others. As we are based in the community of Bound Brook where there is a large Hispanic community we are dedicated to helping dismantle the stigma. There are many ways to help battle said stigma in the Hispanic community such as, but not limited to:

  • Provide resources made for Hispanics or the Latinx Communities. By providing a source that is targeted towards people within their own culture, not only will a sense of solidarity be made, but also can explain in better detail the importance of mental wellness.

  • Show them the facts. Did you know that a study on Latinx college students showed that those students who had higher levels of stigma were less open to seeking professional help for their mental health? This can be extremely harmful and in some cases dangerous. By informing others on this, it not only helps put things into perspective but also demonstrates the importance of dismantling the stigma.

  • Debunk common myths they might have. Common myths can stem from interpersonal anxiety as they might see someone who struggles internally as “different”. Explain how harmful their biases can be and do your own research as well to debunk any myths that even you might have believed.

  • Keep in mind — stigmatization often is a result of prolonged suffering in silence. These communities have certain struggles that are unique and can lead to underlying mental health issues. Some of these struggles may be, but not limited to: immigration, generational trauma and conflicts, along with many more. Let the people around you know that there are options to allow themselves not to feel burdened with the weight of all of this on their own.
