Overview

Each year within the Student Ambassadors for Community Health, we chose a new project in order to help accommodate for a community health issue within Bound Brook. Within our first year, we chose to focus on physical health and street safety through a variety of smaller scaled projects throughout the town. This project consisted of murals, crosswalks, and a parklet that our group made.

Murals

With guidance from local artists, us students in SACH were able to design murals that were placed throughout Bound Brook. We got the help of members from the community to come in and paint the murals with us. This allowed for members of the community to come together and work towards a common goal! These murals can be found at:

  • Codrington Park

  • Smalley Elementary School

  • VanHorn Plaza Downtown

Crosswalks

By working with local government officials, we were able to work on multiple crosswalks in downtown Bound Brook. We collected data regarding jaywalking, cyclists, distracted driving, and vehicles yielding to pedestrians which led us to adding crosswalks to our project. The intent of the crosswalks are to create high visibility The bright colors serve as a way to make cars drive slower, especially in these areas where people are commonly walking.

Piña the Parklet

The last aspect to the project was Piña the Parklet. A parklet is a sidewalk extension that can provide more space and amenities for folk using the street. The parklet can be quickly assembled and disassembled for transportation. Piña is roughly the size of a parking space and comes with tables and chairs, which makes it useful for bigger events. Throughout the month of July, we assembled Piña to offer Bound Brook and its residents an attractive place to stop by and sit and rest while taking in the activities of the streets.
